Frauds & Scams

🚩Red Flags

End-of-life planning can make individuals and families vulnerable to predatory scams that exploit grief, urgency, or confusion. This section explains the most common frauds targeting the dying and the bereaved, how to recognize them, and what steps to take to protect yourself and your loved ones. Awareness is the best defense—knowing the warning signs can prevent emotional and financial harm during an already difficult time.

Funeral Home Imposters

If someone claiming to be from a funeral home contacts you urgently for payment—stop and verify before sending any money.

🚩RED FLAG: They ask for payment through Apple Pay, Zelle, wire transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Legitimate funeral homes do not request money this way. Instead, hang up and call the funeral home directly using a trusted phone number.

Corpse Law

Death Certificate & Document Fees

Scammers claim additional paperwork or “certification” fees are due after a death to release remains or documents. Government agencies never collect payment this way.

Pre-Pay Plan Scams

Some companies sell “prepaid” plans that disappear or deliver little value. Verify licensing and read the FTC’s Funeral Rule protections before paying.
