Merged Organizations

Life’s End Options (LEO) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization born from the merger of several dedicated organizations. We are 100% volunteer staffed.

FCA of California

The Funeral Consumers Alliance of California, founded in 1962, was a nonprofit created to support its member affiliates. It served as an umbrella organization in public meetings and legislative hearings, acted as a communication hub for sharing information, and developed educational resources to encourage thoughtful pre-planning while countering misleading claims from the funeral industry. Longtime director Cheryll Moore later became one of the founding members of LEO.

It became the Funeral and Memorial Society of Monterey Bay in 1974, and adopted its current name in 2000. Operated entirely by volunteers without a formal office, the organization adapted to virtual work during the pandemic. A newsletter was published until 2015, and membership, once over 700, has since declined to under 200.

The Funeral Consumers Alliance of Northern California (FCANC) was founded in 1959 as the Sacramento Valley Memorial Society. A nonprofit 501(c)(3), it focused on providing the public with information and education about death and dying, helping families make informed decisions about end-of-life care and body disposition. Longtime director Jason Bense later became one of the founding members of LEO.
